How to Ripen Tomatoes Inside
- 1). Wash the tomatoes in cool water, removing the soil residue. Twist off the stems, but do not damage or pierce the fruit in the process.
- 2). Wrap each tomato in a sheet of tissue or newspaper. Wrapping prevents a rot problem on one tomato from spreading to neighboring fruits. Place the wrapped tomatoes in a single or double layer inside a box.
- 3). Set the box in a 60- to 70-degree F location, away from direct light. Avoid overly dry areas in the home, such as near heating vents, because tomatoes require moderate humidity to ripen properly.
- 4). Check the tomatoes daily. Remove those from the box that have ripened sufficiently. Ripe tomatoes have firm skin and turn an even red all over.
