Why Should We Wear Safety Glasses & Hard Hats?

2

    Significance

    • In 1970, Congress created OSHA, a division of the U.S. Department of Labor, to ensure safe working conditions for employees by determining and enforcing standards for the workplace, including safety glasses and helmets. OSHA rules cover workers and are enforced through federal OSHA guidelines or through state guidelines, which must be equivalent or better than the federal OSHA guidelines.

    Safety Glasses

    • Safety glasses must comply with the American National Standards Institute, ANSI Z87.1 Eye and Face Protection Standard. The frames are marked with a "Z87" and safety lenses, which must meet a certain level of impact resistance, are marked with a "+" or a "v" or "s." Safety glasses include prescription and nonprescription spectacles, goggles, face shields and welding helmets. Some safety glasses have side protection that helps prevent injury from flying particles. Newer styles of safety glasses have wraparound protection.

    Safety Hats

    • A safety hat or helmet is usually designed as a rigid shell worn to protect your head. Most safety hats have a system inside that acts like a shock absorber, and some have insulation to protect against electrical shocks. Depending on the work, helmets may have additional features and guards that protect your shoulders or they may be modified to accommodate safety glasses worn underneath.

    Considerations and Warnings

    • Your safety glasses and hat both must fit properly to provide adequate protection. If your glasses are too loose or tight, are not adjusted right or do not have the correct type of side shields or guards, then you could still get hurt. Most opticians adjust safety glasses free. If you are unsure of the fit of your glasses or your helmet, then have a qualified person determine that your safety gear is on properly.
