Information on the Coconut Fruit
- The coconut palm was mentioned in Indian writings more than 2,000 years ago and in Sanskrit writings as far back as the fourth century BC.
- Nutritious, fat-free coconut water is rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. The meat of the coconut is used fresh or dried in sweet and savory dishes, or shredded for use in candy, cakes and pastries.
- Coconut oil softens, soothes and heals dry skin. It's commonly used in beauty preparations such as moisturizers, hair products and soap; pure coconut oil has traditionally been used in India and Southeast Asia for cosmetic purposes.
- Coconut oil's antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties fight infection and illness when used internally and topically. It's often used in alternative remedies for treating psoriasis, eczema and dandruff. Although an estimated 90% of fat in coconut is saturated, coconut oil is not a risk to cardiovascular health. Coconut oil's thermogenic properties are even believed to help promote weight loss.
- Coconut shells are used as bowls in India, instruments in Philippines folk dances and in making Hawaiian shirt buttons. Coir, a fiber collected from the husk, is used to make rope, doormats, rugs and brushes.
