2
Bulgaria is the very latest winter sports resort and it is fast up and coming as an exciting yet affordable place to indulge your snow passion whether you prefer skis, a board or just the après ski evening antics! But which ski resort should you choose in Bulgaria as there is such choice? The main four are Bansko, Borovets, Pamporovo and Vitosha and each offers a winter sports enthusiast a very different flavour of Bulgaria and a very different adventure...
Bansko is probably the most well known ski resort in Bulgaria - it is also a very well developed resort and it even has summertime appeal with an international golf course.
In terms of the skiing and the essential facts you need to know, the season runs from the 15th of December to the 15th of May making it one of the longest in the entire nation.
The town itself is 925 meters above sea level and the skiing area is on 2000-2600 meters and accessible from the town within 25 minutes thanks to the brand new gondola lift.
The daily prices for equipment hire and lift passes are reasonable and in terms of the skiing available...
it's fantastic! There are multi lingual ski instructors available and nursery slopes so even the beginner is well catered for - and moving up in pleasant increments of ability are the resort's slopes and runs.
There is some off-piste skiing available and cross country runs and all in all Bansko is a very good resort for quality skiing no matter what level you are at in terms of ability.
Borovets is possibly the most traditional ski resort in Bulgaria - and the oldest and best well established.
It has played host to a number of international competitions as well and the emphasis on Borovets is solely on winter sports - so you can ski, board, skidoo, night ski...
whatever takes your fancy.
Again, the range of ski runs is exceptional although prices in this resort are higher than in most others.
Pamporovo is a modern resort about to benefit from substantial long term investment.
There is a plan to extend and improve ski runs and also gondola and lift accessibility and there are plans for an airport in the vicinity as well as a new major highway which will mean it will be far easier to access the brilliant skiing in Pamporovo.
Equipment rental is easy and affordable - budget about 40lv a day and 30lv for a day pass to the lifts - there are about 100 multi lingual instructors available, the resort is popular with snow boarders as well and the off-piste skiing is exceptionally appealing making this particular resort an all round, attractive, affordable and welcoming one.
And finally you have the resort of Vitosha which is so close to the capital city of Bulgaria Sofia that it is billed as being Sofia's ski resort! Here there are opportunities for mountain climbing as well and because Vitosha is Bulgaria's highest ski resort it has almost guaranteed snow for the entire long season.
There are almost 30 km of ski runs offering absolutely the perfect mix of challenges so that the resort can accommodate the complete beginner in its multi lingual ski school right up to the world class skier.
This particular resort is also popular with cross country skiers and only really unsuitable for beginner boarders because it can be quite rocky.
Whatever it is you're looking for in terms of a winter sports resort - Bulgaria can offer you that which you seek and much, much more!
