How to Create a Self-Installing Bootable USB Key to Install an OS

1
    • 1). Insert the USB key into one of your computer's open USB ports.

    • 2). Open the Start Menu and type "diskpart" in the search field at the bottom. Press "Enter." Windows displays the command prompt and runs the DiskPart utility. The window displays the prompt "DISKPART>".

    • 3). Type "list disk" and press "Enter." The window displays a list of the computer's storage devices. Record the number in the "###" column for your USB key; this device should display a number such as "4 GB" in the "Size" column, as opposed to a much larger value, such as "120 GB" for your computer's hard drive.

    • 4). Type "select disk (number)" and press "Enter," where the number is the one you recorded in the previous step. For example, the completed command might read "select disk 2."

    • 5). Type "clean" and press "Enter." This operation removes the current partition from the USB key, so make sure you have removed all data from the device you want to keep.

    • 6). Type "create partition primary" and press "Enter." This command creates a new partition on the USB key.

    • 7). Type "active" and press "Enter." This command makes the new partition bootable.

    • 8). Type "format fs=fat32 quick" and press "Enter." This formats the partition, making it possible to save data on it.

    • 9). Type "assign letter=e" and press "Enter." This gives the USB key the drive letter "E:" in Windows. If you already have a drive with that assignment, use another letter.

    • 10

Close the command prompt and insert the disc for the operating system you want to install. If the disc automatically displays an installation window, close the window.

    • 11

Open the Start Menu and click the "Computer" icon.

    • 12

Right-click the icon for your optical drive, and select "Explore."

    • 13

Press the "Ctrl" and "A" keys to highlight all of the files and folders on the operating system disc. Right-click the files and select "Copy."

    • 14

Click "Back" to return to the "Computer" window, and double-click the icon for the USB key.

    • 15

Right-click in the open window and select "Paste" to copy the contents of the operating system disc to the USB key.

    • 16

Move the USB key to a computer without an optical drive to begin installing the operating system.
