How to Select a Roofer
- 1). Locate roofers who have a license in your state by contacting the state's licensing board (see Resources).
- 2). Look up the name of the roofer, or the business name, on the Better Business Bureau's website (see Resources) to see if complaints have been made against the roofer. Not all roofers are BBB members, but many professionals are.
- 3). Go to the licensing department of the county where the contractor lives and ask to examine her public file. This will include any complaints that have been officially filed against her. Some counties also publish this information in the local newspaper.
- 4). Call the roofer and verify that he has substantial experience working on your type of roof. Ask him to provide, for free, a cost estimate of repairs.
- 5). Ask to see documentation that the roofer has both general liability and worker's compensation insurance. General liability insurance will cover damages the roofer causes to your property or neighboring properties. Worker's comp insurance ensures that roofing workers won't sue you if they are injured on the job.
- 6). Ask for the names and phone numbers of at least three other people or businesses for whom the roofer has completed work. Call these references and verify that they were satisfied with the quality and speed of the roofer's work.
- 7). Ask if the roofer provides a warranty for her work and how long the warranty lasts. Do not use a roofer who does not offer a warranty.
