How to Open a Home Day Care in Illinois
- 1). Meet minimum requirements. The state of Illinois doesn't require classes or tests to get a home daycare license. The state does require that home daycare operators are at least 18 years old and do not have conditions (mental or physical) that would interfere with operating a home daycare center.
- 2). Request application materials. An application can be requested from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. Request two applications. This way, if you make a mistake when filling out the application, you have a back-up.
- 3). Fill out the medical form that comes with the application material. Bring this form to your doctor. The doctor needs to give you a physical exam and confirm that you've passed a tuberculosis test (TB). This form needs to accompany application materials when sending them back to the state.
- 4). Pass a background check. Everyone in the home over the age of 18 years old needs to pass a background check. Felony convictions will interfere with your ability to secure a child care license in the state of Illinois.
- 5). Purchase the necessary equipment. Besides the basic materials, such as cribs, nap mats and toys, you will need safety equipment. You must have at least one fire extinguisher, working smoke detectors, a first aid kit and properly installed safety proofing devises (such as outlet covers and cabinet safety latches).
- 6). Schedule an inspection. After receiving application materials, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services will contact you to set-up an inspection date. Make sure safety equipment is insalled before the inspection.
