How to Size a Water Pressure Booster
- 1). Write down the required gallon per minute figures for every water fixture in your home. This includes sink faucets, tub and shower heads. If you've installed these devices in your home yourself, the gallons per minute requirements will be listed in the documentation. If these were installed prior to when you purchased your home, you can use some rough figures for estimation. For example, if you know that your shower head was installed before 1994, write down a GPM of 3. If you know your shower head was installed after 1994, write down a GPM of 2.5.
- 2). Add up all the GPM figures you found in Step 1. This will give you the total GPM requirement for any water pressure booster system you buy.
- 3). Find the Total Dynamic Head for the multiple floors in your home if applicable. If you have two floors in your house, for example, you need to measure the height in feet from where the water source is to the point where the water will be released, for example, a shower on the second floor. Next, measure the length of the pipes that will be used to carry water from one floor to the next. For example, you need to measure the length of the pipes that move the water vertically. You also need to measure the length of the pipes that move the water horizontally. The vertical pipes are called the "static head," and the horizontal pipes are called the "friction head." Add these two numbers together to find the Total Dynamic Head.
- 4). Purchase a water pressure booster that can supply the required gallons per minute to your home that you calculated in Step 2 with the Total Dynamic Head requirement you found in Step 3.
