With computers in charge of running everything from payroll to large machinery and heavy equipment, it's important to make sure that typists are fast and accurate when it comes to keyboarding. In the past, would-be typists had to rely on expensive software or classes in order to learn--and this type of instruction was typically quite dull and boring. Today's typing students, however, have the option of learning right from the comfort of their own home with typing-based video games. - "Typing Test" is a free program that is available from Typing Master. You can choose the length of the test--anywhere from one to three minutes, and the general theme of the content. Themes include astronauts, Aesop's fables, baseball rules and news headlines.
- "Numpad Kenny's" is an instructional take on a familiar carnival game that is commonly called "Whack-A-Mole." You will need to make sure the Number Lock button on your keyboard is turned on before playing this game, which focuses strictly on the keyboard's number pad. Watch what holes the moles emerge from and press the corresponding key on the number pad to send them back down. Each round is timed, so you'll need to press the keys as fast as possible if you want to advance to the next round of play.
- "Type It" is a Flash-based keyboarding speed game for children and adults. Putting the focus on the home-row keys of your keyboard, "Type It" will familiarize you with the basic keyboarding skills necessary to become a faster typist.
- "Type Type Revolution" is an instructional keyboarding game that is loosely based on the game "Dance Dance Revolution." Players have the opportunity to select one of ten different background songs and one of three different difficulty levels, making this game accessible to typists of all skill levels. Players will have to press the corresponding keys at exactly the right moment, scoring bonus points for creating letter combinations. Fail to press the correct keys and your session will be over.
- "Cup Stacking" provides an instructional take on the recreational activity of cup stacking. This Flash-based game presents you with a number of cups, which you'll need to stack and unstack by pressing the corresponding letter. "Cup Stacking" does have a time limit, so you'll need to press those keys in order to stack as many cups as possible. The game's sound can be toggled on and off according to the player's preference.
