New Jersey Boat Safety
- The boating safety course and exam can be taken at one of 16 locations across New Jersey and adjacent areas of Pennsylvania and New York. The course and exam can also be administered online at NJboatsafety.com.
- A New Jersey safety certification is required to operate a powered vessel in New Jersey, safety certifications and classes from other states are not accepted.
- Boat operators must be at least 13 years of age to operate a vessel with an electric trolling motor or vessel under 10 horse power. Operators of all vessels larger and more powerful than that must be at least 16 years of age.
- The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has added an additional information into the safety course to show boaters how to be safe boaters toward their marine environment.
- New Jersey law is consistent with all of the federal and Coast Guard mandates in place for waterway navigation. However, some localities are subject to more specific regulations, such as no-wake zones.
