Florida has two types of contractor licenses for construction workers. A registered license allows you to work in a particular city, county or other local level. A certified license allows you to work anywhere in Florida. Each area of expertise has a different license, but they all have similar qualification requirements. - You must be at least 18 years old.
- You must pass all parts of the Construction Industry Licensing Board licensure examination for your area of expertise.
- You must have four to five years of construction-related education and experience. This can range from four years of work experience--during which you must have worked as a foreman for at least one year--to a four-year degree from an accredited college plus one year of work experience.
- You must submit your fingerprints for a background check.
- You must obtain public liability and property damage insurance. In addition, you must have either worker's compensation coverage or an exemption.
- You must submit credit reports for yourself and any business entities that you want to qualify. These must include details at the local, state and federal levels.
- You must pay all examination and licensing fees.
