Why is pretty much a useless word, especially when it stands alone.
Why? I'll tell you why.
When you ask "Why," you put people on the defensive.
You're asking for a rationale, explanation, or justification for what has been said or done.
It is basically a confrontational word.
How do you feel when someone asks you why?Wouldn't you prefer to have someone say "I don't understand" or "Could you explain that to me please?" When you ask yourself, "Why did I do that?" are you not chastising yourself? Wouldn't it more helpful ask, "How could I have done that differently?" or "What is it that made me choose to do that?"Why is a whiney word.
There are so many better ways to ask question.
There are so many more productive ways to request information.
Say goodbye to why.
Try is also a useless word.
Basically, try is a cop-out.
It is an evasive word designed to keep us from commitment.
Look at it this way, if I tell you I will try to be at a meeting at 9:00 AM, you have no idea if I will be there or not.
I didn't say, "I will be there.
" I said, "I will try to be there.
"There is a big difference.
If I'm not there, I tried.
If I tell you "I will be there" and I don't show, then I have let you down.
I have failed to do what I said I would do.
"I will," is a commitment.
" "I'll try," is a shrug of the shoulders.
I tried to write this without using the word "why.
" I didn't, but I tried.
Try to go today without asking "why?" And while you're at it, why not go a day without saying "try" too? Go ahead, why not try?
