When to Replace Parts in a Toyota Corolla
- Inspect and change the engine oil at proper intervals for better engine protection.
Engine bearings, piston rings, valves and other fast-moving parts need oil to keep them from self-destructing. The viscosity in the engine oil protects these parts against friction and damage. However, oil viscosity wears down after so many months of service. Check the level and condition of the oil at least every month and replace it every 7,500 miles or seven months (or sooner) to avoid serious engine damage. - Replace worn or defective ball joints.
The ball joints carry the vehicle weight when they turn in different angles. Inspect and service the ball joints every 15,000 miles or every 18 months. If worn out, replace them. At the same time, check the brake linings and differential oil. The lining on the brake pads and shoes wear down, diminishing your ability to slow or stop the vehicle. Also, check the oil level inside the differential. Add oil, or replace it, if it has become too thin. - Coolant helps to carry heat away from the engine.
The main job of the coolant is to transfer heat away from the engine. However, the chemical composition of the mixture will deteriorate and become corrosive. If not changed on time, it may affect engine components like water pump, thermostat and radiator. Replace the coolant every 24,000 miles or 24 months and check its condition between changes. - A clean filter is necessary to keep dust and dirt off the engine.
The air filter keeps dust and dirt from entering the intake manifold. However, a clogged filter will choke the engine. Replace the filter every 30,000 miles or three years. When installing the new filter, remove dust, dirt and debris from the filter housing. At this time, replace the spark plugs as well. Worn out spark plugs will affect engine performance and fuel economy. Install the spark plugs recommended for your particular Corolla model. Check your car owner's manual. Also, inspect the condition of the spark plug wires and distributor, if your particular model is equipped with it. - Drive belts help to operate the charging and steering systems.
Replace the fuel filler cap and drive belts every 60,000 miles or six years. The fuel tank cap gasket prevents fuel vapors from releasing into the atmosphere. It helps the Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) control system on your Toyota Corolla redirect fuel vapors into the intake manifold for proper burning.
After years of use, drive belts split, tear and wear down. Without a drive belt, the charging and steering systems on your Toyota Corolla will not operate. Replace them at this time or before, if necessary.
