My Dryer Is Hot But Not Drying
- 1). Remove the lint trap and clean off all the lint. The lint trap is probably located in the upper right or left corner on a front-loading dryer and below the front door of a front-loading machine. Ideally you should clean the lint after every use of the dryer, especially if you're drying blankets or other large items. This is one of the main culprits for dryers that aren't working, so go ahead and try a small load of laundry after cleaning the lint trap.
- 2). Test your dryer's thermostat, which regulates the internal temperature. Unplug the dryer to avoid hurting yourself and tip it forward if the control panel on your model is on the back of the dryer (most are). Unscrew the control panel with the Phillips head screwdriver and place the screws carefully aside. The thermostat is probably a one to two inch oval that is yellow or orange. Remove the two wires leading to it by pulling on the metal connectors with the needle nose pliers. Turn on the multimeter on "R X 1" setting and touch the wires from the thermostat to the terminals. If it is room temperature, the voltmeter should read zero (see reference). If it does not, it needs to be replaced.
- 3). Replace the thermostat if necessary. Leave the wires from step two disconnected, and unscrew the two small screws on the old thermostat with the Phillips head. Screw in the new thermostat and replace the wires with the metal connectors. Put the metal control panel plate back on, and reset and turn on the dryer.
