Compassionate Versus Tough Love Substance Abuse Programs

46
In the past, many drug treatment centers used a tough love approach for their substance abuse programs; however, there has been a significant increase in the number of rehabs treating addiction with compassion and support.

What is Rehab?

Inpatient drug and alcohol treatment centers, or rehabs, are commonly known as the best and most effective way for those struggling with addiction to stop using drugs or drinking and get back to a healthy lifestyle. Rehabilitation centers require their patients to live at the facility for the duration of their treatment. Typical stays at rehab normally range from 30-90 days, but can be much longer depending on the patient. Typically a drug treatment center offers various substance abuse programs to help their patients beat addiction and get ready to face the world sober.

What Makes Rehabs Different?

All drug and alcohol treatment centers aim for the same result: helping someone who is struggling with addiction to stop drinking, using drugs, gambling, etc. While there are some fundamental differences in the approach that each rehab takes, the main aspect of treatment that makes them all different is the quality of the staff and the type of support they offer. Generally speaking, there are two types of care that you will find at a rehab: tough-love versus compassion. The tough-love approach to treating addiction is very old-school. You have to remember that drug and alcohol treatment centers are a relatively new idea as far as healthcare is concerned.

The Tough-Love Approach

Drug rehabs as we know them have only been in existence for a little over 60 years. Undoubtedly, the first rehabs that were opened to the public more than likely implemented a tough-love approach to their substance abuse programs. Back then, little was known about addiction and that it is a disease that requires care from professionals. Rehabs that offer the tough-love approach to treatment nowadays aren't nearly as brutal as those back in the 1950s and 1960s; however, they still treat addiction with a very stern hand, which doesn't work for everybody.

The Compassionate Approach

The more common approach to implementing substance abuse programs at rehabs in the present time is by doing so with compassion and support. Rather than shoving a cookie-cutter package of care options down each and every patient's throat, rehabs who utilize kindness and compassion in their implementation of care more often create a personalized treatment plan for each patient and treat them all as individuals.
While both ways of treating addiction have had success, there is no doubt that one seems far more pleasant than the other!
