How to Check a Driver on Windows XP
- 1). Click on the "Start" button in the lower left corner of your screen and let the menu options open.
- 2). Right-click with your mouse on the "My Computer" icon located in the Start menu. It brings up another set of menu options from which to choose.
- 3). Select "Manage" to access the Computer Management program. There are other options available to you within this program relating to the maintenance and management of your computer.
- 4). Click on "Device Manager," which is located beneath the "System Tools" subheading on the left-hand side. The drivers that are associated with your computer appear in the windowed section just the left of the menu item you clicked. They are alphabetized by hardware type they control.
- 5). To access a specific driver, look for the hardware it is related to (printer, monitor, network adapter). Click on the "+" beside the hardware selection to open the list of drivers associated with it. If your hardware is not listed, then it is possible there is no driver installed for that equipment.
- 6). Right-click on the driver you wish to check. A menu of selections appears. Choose "Properties" located at the bottom of the list. Properties window appears showing several different tabs at the top.
- 7). Look at the first tab that opens, "General", in the middle section. Device status gives you the current condition of your driver. The status gives you a general idea of the state of your device, whether it is enabled, disabled, functioning properly or has other problems.
- 8). The third tab in the Properties window is for the driver of that device. Click on that tab to view details, update, uninstall or roll back to a previous version of your driver.
- 1). Click on "Start" in the lower left corner of your screen.
- 2). Choose "Run," which is located at the bottom right of the Start menu selections.
- 3). Inside the input box, type "devmgmt.msc" and click on "OK" to bring up the Device Manager. This list is the same as that in the right-hand section of your Computer Management program, which is step 4 in the previous section.
