Laser Surveyor Transit Instructions

    • 1). Set up your tripod's transit at a point on the ground from which you will be able to read a secondary point at least 150 feet away. Spread the tripod legs approximately three feet apart so that it stands stably. Adjust the legs so that the upper plate is about at your chin level.

    • 2). Remove the transit from its storage container and affix it to the tripod. Hold on to the transit with one hand during the process.

    • 3). Mark an Instrument Point (IP) on the ground, which will be the exact spot at the center of the tripod. Use the optical plummet (laser) to center the instrument. Level the transit by adjusting the legs of the tripod. Push the tripod leg points into the ground. If the transit legs rest on hard ground, you will need to provide some way to prevent slippage. Re-level the transit so it is directly center of your IP.

Check the level of the transit by turning it 360 degrees and checking for level while adjusting leveling screws. Check the level every 90 degrees and repeat when finished.

    • 5). Sight your second point, referred to as the Backsight Point, with the horizontal angle at zero. On a laser transit, push the 0SET button when sighting the Backsight Point. Focus on a specific point while an assistant holds a vertical pointed pole or plumb bob. Now you are ready to use the transit for surveying.
