How to Clean a Hayward Filter
- 1). Disconnect the power source to the filter. You can do this either by pulling the plug or tripping the breaker.
- 2). Unscrew the inlet hose connector. This is a hand screw, so you don't need any tools for it. Just turn it counter clockwise until it comes off.
- 3). Disconnect the outlet connector. One again, it's a hand screw, so just turn it counter clockwise until it comes off.
- 4). Open the relief valve, which is located directly on top of the filter. This will allow air inside and speed draining.
- 5). Remove the cover on the unit. There will be a ring of nuts and bolts on the top edge of the unit. All of these need to be removed. So, using your adjustable wrench, begin unscrewing the nuts in a counterclockwise rotation. Once the bolts are removed, tap the sides of the cover with your hand to loosen it slightly, then pull it off. Make sure you line up the front and the back of the unit because the cover needs to go on the exact same way it came off.
- 6). Spray off the interior of the filter. With your hose and spray nozzle, spray the interior filter elements to clean off any major dirt or foreign particles.
- 7). Soak the Hayward filter unit in a soap solution. Add 3 cups of dishwashing detergent to you garbage container or 55 gallon drum, and fill it up with enough water to completely submerge the filter unit itself. Place the filter unit into the soapy solution, and allow it to sit inside overnight.
- 8). Clean off the filter. Pull it out of the solution and rinse it off thoroughly with your sprayer nozzle. Make sure that you get all of the soap solution off of the filter.
- 9). Reassemble the filter. Make sure that all the screws are tight. The soapy solution can be dumped down any drain.

Test your cleaning and reassembly. Plug in your filter, turn it on and check the hand screws and the bolts for any leaking. If there is a leak after reassembly, merely tighten the junction down a bit more and that will solve the problem.
