About Epsom Salt
- Epsom salt is made up of mostly magnesium, which is one of the most abundant elements found in the human body. The name Epsom salt is derived from one of the earliest discoveries of magnesium sulfate during the era of Shakespeare. The discovery was made in Epsom, an area in England, while salt refers to the chemical makeup of the magnesium sulfate. Magnesium helps in regulating many bodily activities, including toxin elimination, energy production and muscle control. If you are deficient in magnesium, it can lead to health issues, like joint disorders, stomach complaints and heart diseases.
- One of the most common uses of Epsom salt is to provide relief from muscle or joint pain. To use Epsom salt this way, dissolve 2 cups of Epsom salts into a warm bath. Soak in the tub for 15 to 30 minutes to find relief from your muscle pains or strains. If you don't have time to soak in the bath, mix the salt and warm water together and make a compress. Place the compress on the site of the injury.
- Epsom salt has the ability to increase water in the intestines, which can promote a bowel movement. To use Epsom salt as a laxative, mix 1 tsp. in half a glass of water and then drink the mixture. If you don't like the taste, mix a small amount of lemon juice into the drink. You can repeat the dose four to six hours later, but no more than two doses should be consumed daily.
- Most manufacturers will only recommend Epsom salt as a way to treat muscle aches or internally as a laxative. Speak to your doctor before using it to for other indications, such as a sleep aid, insulin support and toxin flush. Some people also choose to use Epsom salt to exfoliate their skin. To do this, two cups of Epsom salt is mixed in with 1/4 cup of petroleum jelly along with a few drops of lavender oil. After scrubbing the mixture on the surface of the skin for a few minutes, the user should rinse completely with warm water.
- Don't use Epsom salt for more than a week as a laxative to treat constipation. Young children, pregnant women and individuals with a pre-existing health conditions should avoid Epsom salt unless otherwise directed by a physician.
