How to Use Syrup of Ipecac
- 1). Call the National Capital Poison Center hotline at 1-800-222-1222 before using syrup of ipecac to induce vomiting. In some cases, vomiting will worsen your condition instead of helping to treat it.
- 2). Avoid giving ipecac to anyone who has swallowed chemicals that may cause burns or medicines that may trigger seizures. The use of ipecac is contraindicated in anyone who has swallowed turpentine, corrosives, petroleum distillates or strong acids.
- 3). Check to make certain that the patient is fully conscious before administering syrup of ipecac. There is a risk of aspiration of vomit if the person it not fully awake.
- 4). Give the child or adult the amount of syrup recommended by the poison control center along with a full glass of water. Drinking a glass of water will make vomiting easier.
- 5). Collect the vomit in a bucket for inspection by the treating doctor. The vomit may be needed to determine what substance was ingested and to plan the next course of treatment, if needed.
- 6). Visit the emergency room for additional treatment unless you are told not to do so by your doctor.
