How to Fix a Wheel Stud

    • 1). Use a lug wrench and unseat the lug nuts on the wheel that's being repaired. Do not loosen the lug nuts at this point. Use a flat screwdriver to remove a wheel cover and access the lug nuts. Position a jack under the vehicle frame near the wheel that's being repaired. Raise the vehicle enough to place a jack stand to support the frame. Lower the vehicle onto the stand.

    • 2). Loosen and remove the lug nuts. Pull the wheel and tire off and set it aside. For disc brakes, locate the bolts that hold the brake caliper and use a socket and ratchet to remove these. Lift the disc brake caliper off the rotor and hang it out of the way with a nylon ties. For drum brakes, use adjustable pliers to remove the bearing cap, cotter key, spindle nut and wheel bearing.

    • 3). Insert a brake adjustment tool in the backside of the drum brake backing plate and loosen the brake adjustment wheel. Pull the brake drum off the backing plate. Use a hammer if necessary and tap the inside rim of the drum to free it from the backing plate.

    • 4). Place the brake drum on a flat surface with the studs facing up. Use a block of wood and hammer on the end of the wheel stud and drive it out of the drum. Insert the new stud from behind and tap it in place with the hammer. Replace the drum on the wheel, insert the wheel bearing and attach the spindle nut, cotter key and bearing cap.

    • 5). Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the disc brake shield to the wheel. Remove the shield. Use a socket and ratchet or adjustable pliers to remove the spindle nut in the center of the wheel hub. Attach a hub puller to edges of the hub and remove it.

    • 6). Place the wheel hub on a block of wood with the wheel studs facing up. Tap the damaged stud with a hammer to knock it out of the hub. Insert the new stud from behind and tap it into the hub with the hammer.

    • 7). Replace the hub onto the axle. Install a new spindle nut on the shaft. Reattach the disc brake shield onto the wheel. Slide the disc brake caliper onto the rotor and reattach it with the original bolts.

    • 8). Replace the wheel and tire onto the studs and tighten the lug nuts with a lug wrench. Raise the vehicle and remove the jack stand. Lower the vehicle.
