How much time per week are you dedicating to your calf training? For most bodybuilders, good calf development is difficult.
Unless you're blessed with good genetics, the only way to achieve good calf development is to dedicate hours and hours of high intensity calf training each week.
How many hours? To answer that, I'll share a story about one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Early in Arnold's bodybuilding career, he was often criticized for his lacking calf development.
He eventually concluded that he had to spend more time and use high intensity training techniques to get his calves to grow.
After several years of intense calf work, Arnold developed bigger calves that were in proportion to the rest of his physique.
One day when Arnold was doing his calf training, a young bodybuilder noticed Arnold's huge calves and told him that he admired Arnold's calf development.
Arnold responded by saying, "You can have calves just as good if you are willing to pay the price".
The young bodybuilder then inquired what Arnold meant by that comment.
Arnold said, "Calves like this will cost you five hundred hours.
Anything less and you won't get results".
Wow! Five hundred hours is a lot of training time.
Whether it will take five hundred hours to build your calves to their genetic potential depends upon many factors, such as your genetics, your diet, your training techniques, and your training intensity.
However, one thing is clear, unless your calves grow easily, you'll have to spend more time on your calves to get the development you want.
Many recreational and competitive bodybuilders have sub-par calf development.
Why is this? Because, in most cases, these bodybuilders don't spend as much training time on their calves as they do on other bodyparts, such as arms, chest and shoulders.
Your calf muscles are very resilient and durable.
They can handle a lot of work and are very hard to overtrain.
Therefore, your calves are capable of high frequency and high volume training.
This means you can easily train your calves every other day or 3-4 times per week.
It also means that you can use high-intensity training techniques such as drop sets and rest-pause sets to insure that the calf muscles are properly stimulated to grow.
So, review your current calf training program and make adjustments to increase your frequency, training time and intensity to force more development of your calf muscles.
