Is it Time For Nintendo to Make a New Handheld?

1
The Nintendo DS was released in North America in November 2004, making it at least 5 years old. Through these 5 years, the Nintendo DS has received various upgrades, such as the upgrade to the DS lite, and the upgrade to the DSi. Both of these upgrades have improved the system some, but it is becoming a bit dated when it comes to power and graphics. With the system becoming dated, is it time for Nintendo to release another handheld system?

The only competitor Nintendo DS has is Sony's handheld, the PlayStation Portable (PSP). The PSP dominates the DS when it comes to power and graphics, however because of the lack of quality games, the Nintendo DS still sells better. However, when you play a game on the PSP and you are a Nintendo DS owner, you do sit and think, "I wish the Nintendo DS could have graphics like this." With the system being 5 years old, it seems like it might be time to give the DS a hardware upgrade that is more than just making the system smaller, and providing it with a camera.

Some people might think "The Nintendo DS just had a hardware upgrade not that long ago, the DSi, so why should they release another handheld?" Well it is because that even though it was upgraded, the processor and graphics chip has not really improved, and games are starting to look pretty old. With current technology, Nintendo could create a new handheld that looks much better at a cost that is still pretty cheap. With the current handheld having the ability to produce graphics similar to the Nintendo 64, maybe they can create one by now that has the ability to produce graphics similar to the GameCube, which everyone would love to see while playing on the go.

The odds are that Nintendo will not make another handheld for another few years. Even though it is time for a new handheld, we will still have to wait for it.
