Life without good friends or close companions can be very unappealing for the human psyche.
It is estimated that senior singles have a tough time outliving their married counterparts.
And those with close friends or family live considerably longer, with better mental acuity, healthier, and happier than those without.
What does all this mean? It means you need friends in your life for many reasons, perhaps the most notable is the reality that humans are social animals and it is part of our general make up.
So, how does one go about making new friends if they don't have very many currently? Well, I often recommend that they go and join small groups such as book clubs, local nonprofit groups, or even small discussion groups.
These types of get togethers, whether one is purely socializing or volunteering can yield some of the strongest and life-long friendships of all.
Perhaps, this is why senior centers around the country have such activities for their local residents, and why they all enjoy them so very much.
Book clubs and discussion groups are just grand because they also have brain strengthening component, making you think.
Developing friends and keeping your mind strong is a doubly great reason to participate, plus you'll have a lot of fun.
Meeting new people, getting to know others, and adding to your general knowledge is a very wise thing to do.
There are various types of discussion groups and you need to go to a couple of meetings to see if it is right for you.
Some maybe too political in nature, but it might be wise to hear the other side of the argument anyway, even if it may not be exactly what you want to hear, it will be most interesting indeed.
