How to Fix an Error 74 on the XBox 360
- 1). Unplug the Xbox 360 power cord and remove the audio and video cables. Put one hand inside of the door where the USB ports are while squeezing the top and bottom of the faceplate with the other hand. Pull off the faceplate.
- 2). Bend the gray ventilation shield at the right side so you can see inside. Poke the long, thin stick through the white holes and dislodge the clips holding the tabs to a gray piece of plastic. Release the tabs so the plastic comes loose.
Press the button on the front of the console. Repeat the procedure to loosen the gray piece of plastic on the inside using the stick. - 3). Turn the Xbox upside down and use the flat edged screwdriver to pry off the four clips holding the top sheet to the bottom of the console. Lift off the top of the bottom shelf so that you can see inside.
- 4). Remove the 14 silver screws and the eight black screws with the star screwdrivers. Turn the console right-side up and set it down. Lift off the outer shell to reveal the components inside.
- 1). Heat up the soldering iron. Locate the GPU chip on the motherboard. Using the original solder place as a guide, carefully and slowly apply solder to the chip as it connects to the motherboard. Let the solder cool.
- 2). Inspect the GPU chip for errant solder. Carefully scrape any errant solder away with the scrapping tool. Reapply solder as necessary.
- 3). Reassemble the Xbox 360 by reversing the disassembly procedure.
- 4). Plug the power cord and audio and video cables back into the Xbox 360. Turn the Xbox 360 on. Start playing games again.
