How to Find Out If a License Is Suspended
- 1). Make sure the Department of Motor Vehicles has your current address on file. If your license is to be suspended you will receive notification to this effect in a letter delivered to your house via the U.S. Post Office.
- 2). Visit DMV.org (see resources). You will need to choose your state from the drop down menu, and then click "Go."
- 3). Find the link that gives your state's information and procedures. You may have to scroll, but it will be on the page. This is where you will get the information to request your driving record. A name and address along with the current fee will be provided. Simply write out a request for your driving record information and enclose it with your name, mailing address, Social Security number, driver's license number and the fee. Most states charge $10 for a copy of this record. If your license is suspended it will show up on the report.
- 4). Contact the NHTSA or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This administration keeps a list of suspended and lost licenses nationwide so that someone cannot apply for another license in another state. You can either call at 1-888-851-0436 or write to them at USDOT/NHTSA West Building, NVS-422 1200 New Jersey Ave., SE Washington, DC 20590. Inform them you are seeking the status of your license.
- 5). Call your local Department of Motor Vehicles and ask them what the status of your license is. Just know ahead of time that because of privacy laws, they cannot discuss anyone else's information with you. You must call about your own license. Their number will be listed with 411.
