Diet for Anemic Children
- Feed your anemic child an oatmeal breakfast with raisins and sweetened with prune juice and molasses. These three foods pack a healthy dose of iron, and the combination of these foods is quite tasty as well. No child will want oatmeal every day, so it is fortunate that eggs are also a high-iron food. Alternate scrambled eggs and oatmeal for breakfast to raise your child's iron level.
- Lunch choices for the anemic child can include tuna, or peanut butter sandwiches. Raisins and apricots can be served on the side to sweeten the meal. Shredded chicken tortillas or sloppy Joe's are also great high-iron options.
- To get children to eat dark green vegetables such as spinach and kale which are full of iron, cook them into lasagna, macaroni and cheese, and other casseroles with your choice of chicken, beef, or turkey. Other high-iron dinner options for kids are fish (cut into bite-size peices), meatballs, and meatloaf.
- Prepare meats and sauces in cast iron pots and pans as extra iron will leach into the foods. Even if your kids won't eat any of the high iron foods already listed, cooking in cast iron cookware will make a big difference in improving their anemia.
