Super Glue was invented on accident by Dr. Harry Coover in 1942. He was trying to create a new type of plastic and abandoned the idea of using cyanoacrylates because they were to sticky. Six years later, Dr. Coover again began working with cyanoacrylates for another project, when he realized that it was an amazing adhesive. He had the formula patented and began working on the commercialization of it as Super Glue. Almost everyone who has worked with Super Glue has run into the issue of gluing themselves or getting glue on something that was not supposed to have glue on it. Fortunately, some home remedies can help you get out of a sticky situation. - Nail polish remover for acrylic nails will not contain acetone. Super Glue may be the strongest glue, but every hero has a weakness and acetone is Super Glue's kryptonite. Acetone is found in most nail polish removers, just be sure to check the label for the ingredient acetone. If the super glue is on skin, dab the remover on with a cotton swab or cotton ball and wait until the glue softens. This method should not be used on plastics or glass, as acetone can cause undesirable effects on these surfaces. - Soften the Super Glue with warm, soapy water.Washing up V image by Sophia Winters from Fotolia.com
When dealing with areas of the body that you prefer not to get acetone near, such as eyelids and lips, warm, soapy water and patience will be your best bets. Never force apart skin when glued with Super Glue; it will rip your skin off. When dealing with Super Glue on plastics or vinyl, dampen a rag with warm, soapy water and place it on the surface of the glue. Wait several hours while ensuring that the rag stays moist on the glue. Once the glue softens, dab with a clean cloth to remove the Super Glue. - Tougher surfaces can handle a little sandpaper for removing dried Super Glue.sable 3 image by Blue Moon from Fotolia.com
If the Super Glue is on a metal, denim or polyester surface, a gentle sanding with fine-grit sandpaper can work the glue off. Gentle circular strokes work best to not ruin the surface area. If you are dealing with a larger glue stain or spill, start with a coarse-grit sandpaper. When using sandpaper, be careful to only work on the glue stain. You wouldn't want to create a fancy new hole in your jeans.
