How to Use a Keyboard With a Blackberry
- 1). Look at your keyboard and notice the different key options. Typically, "#" is on the "Q" key, "*" is on the "A" key, "," is on the "M" key and "@" is on the "P" key. The "ALT" key is below "A," the "Delete" key is below "P," the "Enter" key is below the "Delete" key, the space bar is in the middle of the bottom of the keyboard and the two "Shift" keys are on either side of the bottom of the keyboard.
- 2). Open your SMS text screen and select an SMS recipient. Your fingers should be holding the back of the phone with your thumbs resting on the keyboard. Type your message to the recipient using your thumbs only. You may be slow at typing the first few times, but you'll eventually learn to type faster while using your thumbs.
- 3). Push the "SYM" key, located to the right of the space bar. This will open a list of symbol options like different currency symbols, the percent symbol, and different math signs. Click on the symbol you want to use to insert it into the SMS message.
- 4). Type an accented character. Hold the letter down that should be accented. While holding the letter down, roll your trackball to the right or to the left to see different accent options. For example, if you're trying to spell "resumé" with an accented "e," type out "r-e-s-u-m." Then hold down the final "e," and roll your trackball to the right to select "é."
- 5). Select "Num Lock" when typing out long numeric phrases like phone numbers or addresses. Press the "ALT" key plus the left "Shift" key to lock the numbers. Press the "Shift" key to turn off "Num Lock."
- 6). Select "Caps Lock" to type in all capital letters. Press the "Alt" key, plus the right "Shift" key to lock the caps. Press the "Shift" key to turn off Caps Lock.
- 7). Copy and paste text. Press the "Shift" key, then roll your trackball over the text that you'd like to copy. When finished, press the "Menu" button and select "Copy." You can then press the "Menu" button again in a new SMS text window or email and select "Paste."
