The brake shoes on a Dodge Grand Caravan are located within the drum brakes and are part of the rear brake system. Brake shoes are not exactly easy to repair; however, for the do-it-yourselfer, having the right tools helps move the job along. Aside from the brake shoes, you'll need some very basic auto repair tools in order to change the brake shoes on your Grand Caravan. - A car jack comes standard when you purchase a Dodge Grand Caravan; it is usually located with the spare tire. What doesn't come standard are jack stands. In order to make changing the brake shoes easier, purchasing jack stands to hold the entire back end of your Dodge Caravan, as you change the brake shoes, is very important. Jack stands are not very expensive and can be purchased at any auto parts or hardware store.
- A tire iron also comes standard with the purchase of your Dodge Grand Caravan, and it is as important to getting your brake shoes changed as a car jack. However, the tire iron, which comes standard with your car, usually looks like a crowbar and also doubles as the car jack's lifting bar. Purchasing a tire iron/lug wrench tool, the kind that looks like a cross or a big X, will give you more leverage when you go to remove the rear tires to get to the brake drums.
- A multi-purpose brake tool will come in very handy when you change the brake shoes on your Caravan. This tool can be used to loosen and remove lugs, and it can be used as a pair of pliers. Having a multi-purpose brake tool doesn't mean that you won't need any other tools, but it will help you complete various parts of the job with one tool.
