Diet for a Recovering Alcoholic
- Eat foods high in proteins and healthy carbohydrates to reduce alcohol cravings.
Take multivitamin supplements that include B-vitamins and folic acid. Avoid food and drinks with caffeine and sugar during early recovery to prevent mood swings.
Eat foods containing the amino acids tryptophan and tyrosine. These foods help you to feel better emotionally, be more alert mentally and generally make you feel better. Good sources for tyrosine are tofu, meat, seafood and poultry. Milk, bananas, turkey and sunflower seeds contain tryptophan. - Base your diet choices on the United States Department of Agriculture's Basic Food Group Pyramid. The pyramid has six groups.
1. Fruits, such as grapes, apples, all kinds of berries, melons, pears, avocados, grapefruit and oranges.
2. Vegetables, including broccoli, squash, bell peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, beans, carrots and asparagus.
3. Oils and fats, among them olive, canola, safflower and corn oil. Almonds, peanuts and olives are good choices. Use mayonnaise and margarine with no trans fat.
4. Healthy whole grains, including oatmeal, 100 percent whole grain breads and cereals, brown rice, tortillas and bulgur.
5. Meat, poultry and fish. Add fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel and albacore tuna--fresh or packed in water--to your diet. Eat turkey and chicken without the skin and eggs sparingly--consider an egg substitute. Cook dried beans in soups or eat with rice
6. Milk and milk products. Drink low fat or skim milk, and choose nonfat cottage cheese, yogurt and other milk products. Eat mozzarella cheese instead of cheddar, Swiss or other high-fat cheeses. - Eat snacks such as air popped popcorn without butter, dried or fresh fruit, pretzels and frozen or fresh low-fat yogurt. Cut raw vegetables up and dip them in salsa or low-fat dressings. Mozzarella cheese and whole-wheat crackers or apples, pudding low in fat, and 100 percent orange or other juices are all good diet choices for a recovering alcoholic.
Avoid junk foods or foods high in sugar, such as chips, doughnuts, pies, cakes, brownies, ice cream, soda and cookies. These foods rob you of energy and provide no nutrition to help your body recovering from drinking.
