Grow Lights – An Alternate to Sunlight!

1
with growing urbanization, there is a growing paucity of space and sufficient light to grow plants. This is where grow lights step into the picture.

What Is A Grow Light?

Grow light or plant light is used to help plants grow normally in the absence of proper sunlight. Proper sunlight is needed for sustenance and the appropriate growth of plants. Sunlight initiates the process of photosynthesis, by which plants generate energy. The interaction of sunlight and chlorophyll results in the generation of energy that plants require for proper growth.

Absence of sunlight for any reasons whatsoever would require an artificial source of lighting and it comes in the form of a grow light unless one wants stunted growth of plants. This could be useful in the cold months, when the sun plays hide-and-seek, or when you grow plants indoors where there isn't suitable sunlight.

What Is It Used For?

Plant lights mimic sunlight when they provide a spectrum of light similar to sunlight. In other words, they provide a spectrum of light the leaves of plants consider the ideal for photosynthesis. They are typically used in horticulture, particularly in green-houses where the artificial simulation needs to be supplemented with some more light than is usually available.

Plant lights could also be found helpful when you need to cultivate some species of plants for a special purpose.  This is very true of vegetables. They need complete sunlight to grow and flower well. If they are grown in artificial conditions in the absence of direct sunlight, something like plant lights would have to be used. On the other hand, foliage plants flourish well in shade without sunlight.

There are other types of plants that require a fluctuating quantity of light. Plant lights would have to be switched on and off in this case. There is an increased use of thee lights in households in the modern days.

There are high-intensity discharge lights that could be installed in any location, whether it be in the house or in the garage or in the green-house. There is a mixture of gases within the glass or ceramic tube through which the light passes. It is the quality of the glass that is the determining factor when it comes to the color of the light. These types of light are more efficient as compared to fluorescent lamps. Their growing popularity has seen an increase in the use of reflectors to maximize the potentials of these lights.

What Are Its Different Kinds And Forms?

Modern life has brought out all kinds and forms of HID Grow Lights. The bulb-type ranges from LEDs to fluorescent lights, plasma lights, high-intensity discharge lamps and Incandescent.

There was a time when LED lights gained popularity among plant growers, but their claims proved to be tall claims when it came to pushing plant growth. But they are still used to supplement the spectrum of light required for plant growth.

While plasma lights could prove to be quite expensive for the layman, fluorescents are by far the most popular form of these lights.  But plasma-lights are more efficient than HIDs and they have a longer life. They prove to be a lot more economical and efficient as compared to other kinds.
