Speckled Trout Description

• The speckled trout, also known as the speckled or spotted sea trout, is an aggressive fish colored green or dark gray on top. It has a white or silver belly, an oversize mouth and two large teeth that resemble those of a canine. Its sides are silver with large black spots of varying sizes. A speckled trout of 6 lbs. or more is referred to as "gator trout."

• The speckled trout is a predator that feeds on shrimp, crab, anchovies, silversides, mullet, Atlantic croaker, other small fish and a variety of small animals near the water's bottom. The average size of a speckled trout is 2 to 4 lbs. on the west coast of the United States and up to 5 to 6 lbs. on the east coast. Gator trout typically measure between 15 and 20 inches long.

• The speckled trout lives in nearly all of Florida's waters, the Atlantic seaboard to Massachusetts, south along the Appalachian Mountains, west to Minnesota and north to Hudson Bay. The speckled trout concentrates in rivers, lakes, shallow flats, grassy and sandy areas, oyster bars, shallow flats and inland waters.

• Fishing for speckled trout is best at dawn and dusk. Use live, medium-size shrimp and bait fish for natural bait. Artificial bait should include streamers, plugs, poppers and jibs. During the winter months, use live bait, since they are more likely to test it before striking. They are attracted to light and the loud noise of surface lures and popping flies.
  
  

Brown Trout Description

• The brown trout is brown to olive green on the top, with golden-yellow on its sides and a white or cream-colored belly. It has large black, yellow, gray or reddish-orange spots surrounded by a white halo on its sides, back and dorsal fin. • Brown trout are surface feeders and will eat an assortment of small fish, crayfish, aquatic insects and land insects such as gnats, beetles, worms, caterpillars and ants. • Fishing for brown trout is best from fall through spring. During the summer, the fish are most likely to bite early in the day or late in the evening. Anglers can catch brown trout year-round, although flying fishing tends to be most successful in the spring with the use of light gear.
