How to Chunk Butterfish for Tuna
- 1). Process some of the butterfish in a meat grinder to create a slurry and throw the result in a wash tub.
- 2). Cut the remaining whole butterfish into two or three inch chunks and throw the chunks into the wash tub as well.
- 3). Find a school of tuna by looking for surface activity or diving birds, by using a sonar fish finder or by using your captain's experience and intuition.
- 4). Turn off the engines and allow the boat to drift. Remove a ladle full of the fish slurry from the wash tub and throw the slurry in the water. Throw three or four chunks of butterfish into the water one at a time.
- 5). Continue to throw chunks of butterfish in batches of three or four into the water. Throw in a batch of fish chunks at least once a minute.
- 6). Throw a ladle full of the butterfish slurry into the water about every three to five minutes. Use more fish if the tuna begin to frenzy. Do not stop until you run out of butterfish.
