Another wrinkle has occurred in President Obama's health care reform law. Older adults with the same age and income and similar medical histories could pay vastly different insurance premiums. According to an article in the Monterey Herald, a 62-year old could end up paying $1,200 a year more than his neighbor due to a glitch in the legislation which mainly impacts those 62+ who are too young for Medicare but are eligible for early retirement with Social Security. The way the legislation reads, those who take early retirement (62 is the most common age at which Americans begin taking Social Security) get a significant break on their health insurance premiums. Those who are eligible for Social Security but remain working don't get this same break. "There is an equity issue here. If you get a job for 40 hours a week, you're going to pay more for your health insurance than if you don't get a job," Robert Laszewski, a former health insurance executive turned policy consultant. The Obama administration is aware of the problem and working on a solution. "We are monitoring this issue and exploring options that would take into account the needs of Social Security beneficiaries, many of whom are disabled or individuals of limited means," Emily McMahon, a top Treasury policy official, said in a statement released to the Associated Press. A leading GOP Senator (Mike Enzi, Republican, Wyoming) is also considering legislation that would eliminate the problem. It seems like issues seem to pop up on a weekly basis related to health care reform, and I hope that disparities like these can be worked out well in advance of its implementation, assuming the legislation is deemed to be legal by the U.S. Supreme Court. There are so many issues that businesses and consumers will need to deal with, and the legislation simply is not that well understood by most.

About Richard Kuehn & Family inHome Caregiving of Monterey:
After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member I was dissatisfied with service from local caregiving agencies. I became convinced of the need for a service which provides very personal assistance to the elderly and founded Family inHome Caregiving serving the Monterey Peninsula.
