The Essential Attributes For A Winning Poker Player

11
Poker is a fun game to play online. Even if you play at the small stakes tables or in lower end tournaments it is still possible to enjoy yourself and be a winner - or at least not lose too much. However it is possible to take your game to the next level and become a steady winner or even make a living from playing poker.

However if you do want to graduate from being a recreational poker player in to a semi professional (or even full time professional) player you must develop a totally different approach and mindset as it is completely different from that friendly game with your friends after the bar closes. If this is something you can do then you could be on the way to the dream lifestyle of the successful poker player. Let us have a look at some of the attributes required.

You must have a deep understanding of the game and be able to objectively assess your hand in relation to both what you can see and what you can conclude about the had your opponents have or may have. The way your opponents play is another crucial factor in your decision making. Being able to take all information in to account and then being able to assess your hand compared to what you can see of the other players' hands and the ability to take an informed decision on how to play your hand and when to bluff or fold is key. And it only comes with practice, play and dedication.

You must have the ability to think on your feet. Things happen fast in online poker tournaments so you must be able to figure out quickly how the hand develops with the flop, turn and river and decide if you need to remain in the hand, if it is worth throwing more chips in or folding and waiting for other opportunities to build your chip stack.

You must have the dedication to put the time in at the table. Poker is not about getting rich quick - though that can happen - it is about grinding out the wins and winning more than losing. You will lose and part of that is when it happens to learn from it and bounce back.

You must have, or develop, nerves of steel and be able to keep your emotions in check. Emotion at the poker table is not generally a great idea.

All the above attributes are essential if you want to be a more successful poker player and profit from your play.
