How to Remove Cigarette Smoke From a House
- 1). Clean all windows and glass with white distilled vinegar diluted in warm water, and then open all windows and doors to allow fresh air circulation. Turn on fans and air purifiers if available.
- 2). Place a shallow dish of white distilled vinegar in each room, because the vinegar will absorb the cigarette odors from the air.
- 3). Sprinkle baking soda over your cloth furniture, such as beds and couches, and sprinkle it over any carpet in the house. Allow the baking soda to set overnight, and remove it the next day with a vacuum.
- 4). Put on rubber gloves, and scrub walls and ceilings with a sponge and 50/50 mixture of hot water and ammonia or hot water and vinegar. Wash the floors with your usual floor cleansers.
- 5). Wash wooden surfaces, such as trim and cabinets, with a sponge and pine-scented cleaner, such as Pine-Sol®, diluted to the manufacturer's instructions. Remember to check the product label for its use on wood.
- 6). Wash curtains, drapes and all washable linens with your regular laundry detergent and a cup of white distilled vinegar added to the rinse cycle.
- 7). Primer walls with an odor-sealant, such as KILZ®, if odor or nicotine stains persist on the paint, and then add a fresh coat of paint to the walls once the primer dries.
- 8). Steam clean carpet and furniture if odors persist, or contact a professional carpet cleaning company for assistance. Replace the carpet, if needed, because the padding beneath the carpet can absorb cigarette smoke odors.
- 9). Replace the filters in your furnace and air conditioner. Contact a professional duct cleaner if odors persist through the vents in your house.
