How to Play Roulette

Roulette can be a confusing game to learn, much less attempt to beat. In roulette there is a perfectly balanced wheel that spins freely. A marble (or marble like ball) is released when the wheel is spinning and it bounces around inside before finally landing in one of 38 different slots. In Western Roulette there is a double zero slot, but there isn't one in European Roulette. There are 12 different ways to bet on the outcome in roulette as well. Each has a different payout should you win and different odds of it occurring.

1. Single Bet - Place a chip on a particular number and if the marble lands on that number, you win. The payout is 35 to 1.

2. Split - You also have the option of placing a chip on each of two numbers. The payout is 17 to 1.

3. Trio - Or, three numbers. The payout is 11 to 1.

4. Corner - For a corner bet, you place the chip on the corner where four different numbered boxes touch. If any of those hit, you win. The payout is 8 to 1.

5. Five Numbers - The only location for hitting five numbers is in the first row with 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. It's generally considered a long shot to win this way. The payout is 6 to 1.

6. Street - Placing a chip on a row of three numbers (i.e. 7,8, and 9) is called a street bet. The payout is 11 to 1.

7. Line - Betting on two streets at a time. The payout is 5 to 1.

8. Dozen - There are three boxes located underneath each section of twelve numbers labeled, 1st 12, 2nd 12, and 3rd 12. If any of the numbers hit in the dozen you choose, you win. The payout is 2 to 1.

9. Column - Placing the chip under the column you choose of the three that are available. The payout is two to one. The payout is 2 to 1.

10. High or Low - There is a box on the left-hand side labeled 1 to 18 and another one on the right labeled 19 to 36. The payout is 1 to 1.

11. Red or Black - The easiest bet with a payout based on color, not specific number. The payout is 1 to 1.

12. Odd or Even - Regardless of color or specific number, you are betting that the winning number will be either odd or even. The payout is 1 to 1.

While for the past 300 years of Roulette history some have claimed to have come up with a system to beat the casino, the truth is that the secret to roulette is more in how you place the bets rather than on what particular number to choose. With patience, betting on the better odds of red versus black is more likely to yield a winning day than by guessing which particular number, row or column will strike it big. You won't win big, but you will win more than you will lose.
