How to Change a Headlight in a 1998 Subaru Outback
- 1). Open the hood to the Impreza Outback and approach the headlight assembly with the burned out bulb.
- 2). Disconnect wire harness plug from the back of the three-bladed headlight socket and then pull the headlight protective cover from the back of the headlight assembly.
- 3). Place the telescopic mirror down behind the headlight assembly to enable you to see the retaining clip holding in the headlight. Press the clip inward on the opposite side of the screw hinge and then push it slightly upward to release it from the locking latch.
- 4). Swing the clip outward on its hinge and then remove the headlight from the rear of the headlight assembly.
- 5). Put on the surgical gloves before handling the replacement headlight. Insert the headlight into the assembly making sure to align the notch of the base at the top.
- 6). Swing the clip back into place and then press it inward and slightly downward to resecure it to the locking latch.
- 7). Replace the headlight protective cover and then re-plug the wire harness plug back into the blades of the headlight socket.
- 8). Test the headlights by turning them on and check both the low-beam and high-beam lights before removing any items in the engine compartment and then closing the hood.
- 1). Open the hood and reach behind the headlight assembly with the burned out headlight.
- 2). Disconnect the wire harness by lifting up on the dual-locking clips and then pulling it away from the headlight socket.
- 3). Turn the headlight retaining ring 1/4 turn counterclockwise to align the ring tabs to the notches in the assembly and then pull the ring and headlight out of the assembly.
- 4). Remove the headlight from the ring and then discard it before putting on the surgical gloves.
- 5). Insert the replacement headlight into the ring and then realign the tabs to the notches before turning the ring and headlight assembly 1/4 turn clockwise to lock it into place inside the headlight assembly. Plug the wire harness back in and test the headlight for proper operation.
