How to Make a Regular Light Post Into a Motion-Detector Light
- 1). Turn the main power breaker to the house off. This ensures there is no electricity to any part of the home's electrical system. Or, if you know for certain which breaker is designated for the light, you may just switch off this breaker.
- 2). Place a ladder near the post lantern. Climb the ladder. Unscrew all screws in the globe by turning them counterclockwise and pulling them straight out.
- 3). Pull the globe straight out of the lantern.
- 4). Turn the light bulb counterclockwise to loosen, and pull it straight out to remove it.
- 5). Remove the screws in the fixture.
- 6). Turn the wire nut on the junction of green wires counterclockwise and pull at the same time to remove it. Untwist the two green wires from each other. Repeat this process for the junction of the black and red wires.
- 7). Pull the fixture off of the light post.
- 8). Set the motion detector switches on the bottom of the fixture according to the package instructions. Each fixture has different settings to illuminate the light only at night, only in motion-sensor mode and to determine the duration of light.
- 9). Place the motion detector fixture near the post. Attach each of the color-coded wires to the same colored wires on the light post. Twist each set of green, black and red wires together and place a wire nut on each junction. Push the wiring into the fixture bottom and set the fixture on the light post.

Screw the bulb into the motion-detector sensor in a clockwise direction. - 11
Place the globe on the light post and tighten each screw. - 12
Tighten each screw on the fixture to the light post so it is stable. - 13
Turn the main power breaker back on.
