How to Detect a Secret Camera

2
    • 1). Hide the RF (radio frequency) signal detector device if you are using one, making sure it is not visible to any possible secret surveillance as you search the area. Make sure the detector is not audible also. Typical signal detectors are about the size of a cell phone. They often have three LED lights marked as levels one, two and three, each level reflecting the strength of the signal being picked up. When it detects a signal, it emits a high-pitched beep which progresses from slow to rapid as you move closer to the object emitting the signal. This can be switched off and the device can be put on vibration mode instead which you will feel if it is kept against your body. You'll feel vibrations when the detector finds a signal. A standard signal detector should be able to sense small cameras, recording devices and anything which emits a signal. It should be easy to use, carry and conceal.

    • 2). Turn off any devices in the room which make noise, and listen carefully for any buzzing, high-pitched whining or clicking sounds which some motion-sensitive cameras often make. Make sure all electronic and wireless devices are unplugged so as not to give the detector confusing signals.

    • 3). Turn off the lights if it is night time and look around the room for any tiny lights. These may be "indicator" or "power on" lights carelessly left visible by whoever installed the device. With the lights still off, use your flashlight to examine any mirrors thoroughly.

    • 4). Look around the premises for anything which may seem new or out of place and examine the area around the object. Look around plant pots, under furniture, pictures, cushions, lamps and anything else you can think of. Look around for any new smoke detectors and check old ones. Check electronic appliances such as televisions, DVD players, speakers, light fixtures, alarm clocks and even children's toys and doorways. Check every suspected room thoroughly.

    • 5). Check rooms for wires which are new, out of place or that don't attach to an outlet or any specific object. Wired devices are still used; however, wireless is the most common kind of surveillance used today.
