There are several country building games on the internet in which you can start your own country, and raise it from a small city to a massive nation-state, or even take over the world.
  
  

City of Wonder

• In this Facebook-based game, you start off building a small hamlet into a large city, the capitol of your own sovereign nation. Along the way, you will pass through the history, bringing your civilization into the Bronze and Silver ages, and beyond. Once you install the game to your Facebook page, you will have a persistent world that you can check in on, control and grow.
  
  

Cyber Nations

• Billing itself as one of the most popular browser based country simulation games, Cyber Nations is a large-scale multiplayer game that focuses on your own nation, in a parallel version of Earth today. As you research new technologies, build trade agreements with your neighbors and alliances with more powerful nations, you are in control of what happens to your fledgling nation.
  
  

Caesary

• This title focuses primarily on the Roman era in history, as you get to build your own Roman nation-state. The game takes a while to play, and really focuses heavily on building a Roman look and feel, even to the pantheon of gods, and the units for the military. Fight your neighbors, or focus on building your own cities up.
  
  

Civilization

• Years before the internet was invented, Sid Meier built the very first "Civilization" game. In these games, you build a tiny tribe up into the largest and most powerful nation. You start with virtually nothing, and can ally, fight and steal your way to glory. As your village expands, your villagers will reward you for your progress and leadership.
  
  

Travian

• In a simple browser-based game, you build a small ancient European-themed village into one of the most powerful, eventually having the option to build or capture new villages for your empire. The game has a very slow pace, but the guild system is very robust, letting you while away the time between upgrades as you chat with other players you have allied with.
