How to Maintain a Honda Lawn Mower
- 1). Put on pair of leather work gloves to protect your hands. Raise one side of the Honda mower and position a wooden block to hold it up off the ground. Inspect the Honda mower blade for damage.
- 2). Position a block of wood under the deck along the side. Turn the blade so it contacts the wood and wedges it in place. Fit the end of a torque wrench over the bolt in the center of the mower blade and tighten the bolt to between 36 and 47 pounds. Remove the blocks of wood and lower the mower to the ground.
- 3). Position a block of wood between the blade and inside of the mower deck to prevent the blade from moving. Remove a damaged or worn blade by loosening the bolt in the center of the blade with an adjustable wrench. Replace the Honda blade with a suitable replacement obtained from a Honda mower dealer or mower parts store. Tighten the new blade securely in place with a torque wrench.
- 4). Locate the oil filler tube on the side of the Honda mower. Unscrew the dipstick and pull it straight out. Wipe the oil from the dipstick with a rag, insert in back into the tube and screw it in. Unscrew and remove the dipstick and this time check the oil level on the stick. Add 10W-30 oil to the oil fill tube, if necessary, to bring the level up to the full mark as indicated on the dipstick.
- 5). Change the oil every 50 hours as recommended by Honda. Place an oil collection container on the ground beside the mower and turn off the gas supply from the mower tank. Remove the dipstick from the oil fill tube and tilt the mower toward the collection container and pour out the oil.
- 6). Add new 10W-30 oil to the oil fill tube and check the level by inserting and removing the dipstick to read the level. Continue to add oil until the level on the dipstick indicates the mower is properly filled with oil.
- 7). Open the air filter cover by depressing the lock tab on the side. Remove the air filter and tap it against a hard surface to dislodge dirt, dust and debris. Wipe out the inside of the air filter housing with a rag and assemble the filter back in place.
- 8). Remove the grass catcher bag from the Honda mower and rinse it with running water from a garden hose. Remove old clipping, dirt and debris from the inside and outside of the bag. Allow the bag to thoroughly dry before using the mower.
