How to Improve the Gas Mileage for a 1999 Ford Ranger
- 1). Open your hood. Find and remove the oil filler cap from the driver's side of the engine. Look under your truck for the oil drain plug and position your drain pan below the plug; then pull the plug out. Replace the oil filter by following the instructions in your repair manual. Fill your oil filler cap with oil and put the cap back in place. Start your engine and let it to run for five minutes. Pull the dipstick out; it is positioned next to the oil filler cap. Check the oil level. Ideally, the oil should reach the full mark. Pour more oil in as needed.
- 2). Pour oil additive into your oil filler cap to lubricate the engine. Pour the fuel additive into the gas tank to help the fuel burn more efficiently.
- 3). Remove your old air filter and install a new air filter in its place by following the instructions found in your repair manual.
- 4). Change each of the spark plugs and spark plug wires that connect to the engine. Do each plug change in order on an individual basis so you can keep track of your plugs and wires. Move from one side of the engine to the other as you work.
- 5). Find the manufacturer's recommended tire pressure on the sticker mounted on the inside door jam of one of the front doors. Twist the valve stem counterclockwise out of your tire. Set the tire pressure gauge over the valve stem. Ascertain if the reading you get from the gauge matches the manufacturer's recommendations. Check your other tires and inflate or deflate them to meet the manufacturer's tire pressure recommendations.
- 6). Roll down windows whenever appropriate and only use the air conditioning when you need it. Limit the use of four-wheel drive, and use the lower gears whenever possible.
