Dog Urine Removal With Household Cleaners
- A roll of paper towels is best for cleaning up the mess at first. If the dog just urinated, lay down a few layers of paper towels on the stain and press your foot on it to soak up the urine. Soak up as much as possible before trying to get out the underlying stain.
- The first household cleaner you can use when treating the stain is a solution of white vinegar and water. Put a cup or so of white vinegar in a pail and add an equal amount of water, mixing them together thoroughly. You can then pour this solution directly on the stain and work it over with a scrubbing brush. Use the paper towels again to blot the area dry.
- Use baking soda to soak up excess moisture. Sprinkle it over the area after you blot it dry to absorb a cleaning mixture you use on the stain. You don't need much --- just enough to cover the affected area completely with a thin layer.
- Use hydrogen peroxide, an oxidizer that most people commonly use as bleach, along with some dishwasher detergent. Any regular household dishwasher detergent will do, but you need to use a liquid detergent and not a caustic detergent. Mix about 1/2 cup of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution with a teaspoon of the detergent. Put on a pair of rubber gloves to protect yourself and pour the mixture on the baking soda, working it into the carpet with the scrubbing brush. Once the mixture soaks into the baking soda and it dries, just vacuum it up. The stained area should now be clean and smelling good.
