It is not because you have to exercise and exercise until you are exhausted, but because most people don't understand what really needs to be done to get six pack abs.
The first thing that you need to realize is that around 90% of the people (men and women) who attempt to have six pack abs will fail to achieve their goal.
The reason is that they are not doing the correct ab workout exercises, and they are not getting rid of all the fat that is hiding the muscles.
So, the first thing you need to know is that you will not burn off belly fat just by working the ab muscles.
You need to go on a special diet that targets the ab area along with the proper exercises.

Lay flat on the floor with your arms straight down beside of your body.

Now raise and hold your legs off the ground around 8-10 inches and put your upper body raised into a crunch like position when you are up all the way.

Now raise your arms around 8 inches off of the floor.
4.
Now bring your knees towards your chin, and your chin towards your knees at the same time.
5.
Then go back to the where you are in the position after step 3 and repeat.
You are essentially bringing your legs and chin in over and over working your abs.

These are not meant to be done slowly.
Go kinda fast, but do not overdo yourself or they will be useless.
Below is another example...
1.
Lay flat on the floor with your arms down by your side.
2.
Now raise your legs straight up so that your body is like a 90 degree angle.
3.
Now raise your butt up as far as you can, and then lower it back down to the ground.
4.
Do these over and over and you will feel the burn.
These are only a couple of workout exercises for six pack abs.
