Defibrillators And CPR

1
Has anyone see the recent UK adverts by the BHF (British Heart Foundation) on the importance of knowing CPR techniques? They include hard man footballer/actor Vinnie Jones playing a gangster with two thugs flanking him, practising CPR techniques on a guy who looks like he has stopped breathing.

Vinnie explains in time to the BeeGees song €staying alive' the correct procedure for applying resuscitation techniques on someone.

While this advert is a stroke of brilliance for the marketing guys at the British heart foundation it does point out a serious subject. It asks the question of business do we know what to do if someone needs CPR? How upto date are our first aid boxes, are our staff upto date in their first aid knowledge? And do we have the apparatus at hand should someone go into cardiac arrest.

First aid training

First aid training is not a mandatory requirement to all businesses however depending on the number of employees and the nature of the businesses; it may be a requirement to comply with the HSE standards. ALL business should, however, take responsibility for the health and safety of both their staff and customers. This may be in the just the form of an available first aid kit or for the more savvy business owner they may even hire a first aid consultant to come in and give their staff first aid training.

One note to mention here is that although the first aid training is NOT mandatory, if you have a business with five or more employees and an accident was to happen that you were not prepared for the HSE could then wield its powers to take action against you for not having the neseccary precautions in place.

CPR Techniques

Basic CPR should be of interest to everyone. How many of us would know what to do if someone collapsed in front of us and stopped breathing?. Would we be aware of the techniques to resuscitate that person or would we just call for the ambulance and be helpless till it arrived.
€ To perform CPR you will need to first check to see if the person is breathing. To do this look for movement in the patient's chest i.e is it rising and falling?
€ Check the patient has a pulse. To do this place two fingers on either of a person's voice box on their throat to check for a pulse
If you are unable to find a pulse and they are not breathing they may have gone into cardiac arrest. Once you have eliminated that this not due to a windpipe blockage that is causing suffocation, call for help and begin CPR.
€ Place the palm of your hand flat on the person's chest, making sure that is just over the lower part of the breast bone, and press your hand on the person's chest in a pumping motion by using the other hand on top. This can help the heart to beat again.

Emergecy First Aid Kit AED

Emergency first aid devices called defibrillators or AED's are devices that can provide a electric shock to the heart to jolt into movement again. In order to use these devices you will need to be expertly trained. These can be of great help should you find that there is an employee with angina or other hear t problems.
