How to Replace Brake Pads on a Ford Mustang
- 1). Lift the Mustang with a jack or an automotive lift. An automotive lift is safer and provides easier access to the Mustang, but most people do not have access to one of these. A lift will also allow you to change all four brake pads at once, whereas you will have to lower the car and then raise the other side if you are using a jack and need to replace all four brake pads. If you are using a jack to elevate the Mustang, make sure that the tires on the side that is not lifted are firmly blocked with tire chocks or some other obstruction, and that the car is held in place with a jack stand and not with the jack itself once it is lifted.
- 2). Loosen then remove the lug nuts on one of the wheels with a tire iron then pull off the wheel.
- 3). Remove the bolts holding the brake caliper in place with a hex wrench. Carefully remove the caliper itself.
- 4). Remove the existing brake pad or pads from the caliper. Some versions of the Mustang have two brake pads per caliper while others have only one.
- 5). Lubricate the back of the new brake pad(s) with grease. This must be done before installing the new brake pad(s) into the caliper.
- 6). Install the new brake pad(s) into the brake caliper by sliding them into the slot.
- 7). Reattach the caliper to the Mustang with the bolts, tightening them with the hex wrench.
- 8). Remount the wheel onto the Mustang and reinstall the lug nuts with the tire iron.
- 9). Repeat the above steps for each wheel on which you need to replace the brake pads. After replacing each brake pad, press down on the brake pedal until you feel resistance to circulate the brake fluid. This will prevent a potential brake fluid spill.
