Eucalyptus Oil Cures
- The main property within eucalyptus is eucalptol, which is a volatile oil. This oil is a powerful antiseptic and functions in a similar manner as menthol within the nasal passages. Eucalptol is not only an effective antiseptic, but also an antibacterial. According to the Encyclopedia of Common Natural Ingredients Used in Food, Drugs and Cosmetics, eucalyptus oil has shown to be a potent antibiotic, which allows it to be used to kill certain organisms.
- Eucalyptus oil contains a very strong vapor, which when inhaled will break free phlegm and mucus that accompany most respiratory infections. The oil can be applied directly to the chest to provide relief from congestion and breathing complications. To topically apply this oil, place 15 drops into half-a-cup of olive oil and mix. Generously apply this mixture to the chest region to clear the nasal passages. For head colds, inhaling this oil as a vapor will provide relief from nasal and chest congestion. Boil 2 cups of water and place up to 10 drops of eucalyptus oil into the water. While draping a towel over your head, lean over the steam and breathe normally for five minutes.
- According to the University of Maryland, eucalyptus oil can be applied topically to provide relief from arthritis, sores and boils. The eucalptol within this oil soaks into the skin and provides relief from aching joints, and because of its antibiotic properties, it is able to disinfect and kill any bacteria within sores or boils. Make sure that you do not apply this oil onto an open sore or wound, as this can cause unnecessary pain. The strong aromatic qualities of this oil will repel insects when applied to the skin, making it an excellent companion for camping trips.
To apply eucalyptus oil topically, you will need to pour half-a-cup of a carrier oil, which can be olive oil, almond oil or sesame oil, into a container. Add up to 30 drops of eucalyptus oil into the container and mix. Apply with a washcloth to the affected areas needing relief up to twice a day.
