Disinfection Techniques in a Conventional Oven

32

    Identification

    • Cleaning and disinfecting are separate terms, though they are connected. Cleaning removes visible debris. It often uses soap and water to scrub dirt. Disinfection, however, sterilizes an area and removes microbes like bacteria. You cannot see these with the naked eye.

    Cleaning an Oven

    • Though it will not completely disinfect your oven, cleaning the oven is the first step. Start with a clean surface if you plan on dry-heat sterilizing materials in your oven, otherwise debris in the oven could transfer to the materials you are sterilizing. Take the racks out of the oven and soak them in soapy water overnight. Spray oven cleaner in the oven and let it sit overnight. Make sure the room is well ventilated. In the morning, use a sponge to remove the oven cleaner and any debris. Rinse the sponge in clean water every few minutes. Rinse your racks and put them back in the oven. Turn the oven to 200 degrees F, open it slightly and leave the room while the oven dries and burns through any chemicals left behind. Do this for about 10 or 15 minutes.

    Dry-Heat Sterilization

    • You can use your oven to sterilize materials or even the oven itself with only the heat that comes from the oven. Set your oven to 170 F and clean any materials you need to sterilize. Place them in the oven for one hour. The heat from the oven will sterilize the materials. Pick them up with gloves and keep them in a sealed area. You can also use dry-heat sterilization to sterilize your oven after you clean it.

    Alternative Methods

    • Oven cleaners can be harsh on the environment and your body. Always use gloves while dealing with oven cleaners and other chemicals. You can also use alternatives for cleaning and sterilizing your oven. Using salt on some of the grime is a natural way to get the gunk out. Spray a mixture of vinegar and water instead of using oven cleaner for spot treatments. A paste of baking soda and water can help get out problem areas, too.
